Details: Originally assigned the botanical name of Podocarpus gracilior, the Fern Pine has recently been reclassified as Afrocarpus gracilior by some botanists. A medium-sized, slow growing tree that grows column like and can spread out with age. It has soft gray-green, narrow leaves that create a soft, graceful effect. It is low maintenance and resistant to pest and disease, can handle mild drought and is salt tolerant. The flowers of this species are yellow in color and not conspicuous and produces small fleshy fruit, containing a single seed. The small berry-like fruits are green in color, turning to yellow as they ripen. Young plants should be pruned to maintain a central leader and healthy branch structure. Once established, pruning is not needed, except to achieve the desired size and shape.
