Description
Black Pearl Hot Pepper. 2006 AAS Winner. The first completely black-leafed pepper. A great choice for containers or planting in the garden. Foliage turns from greenish to glossy black with maturity, aided by the sun and heat. Very shiny black fruit matures dark red. Very, Very hot! 14 to 18 inches high, spreading 12 to 16 inches. Grow as an ornamental or in the vegetable garden or both! HOT PEPPERS: When Wilbur Scoville first devised a means to test the heat of peppers, his hottest entry then came in at 20,000 units. Habanero and Thai chilies can go as high as 60,000. Compare that to the sweet bell pepper at zero. When hot peppers are consumed, capsaicinoids bind with pain receptors in the mouth and throat that are responsible for sensing heat. Once activated by the capsaicinoids, these receptors send a message to the brain that the person has consumed something hot. The brain responds to the burning sensation by raising the heart rate, increasing perspiration and release of endorphins. Hot peppers should be eaten with caution!

Part of my third order from Hirt’s this year. As with all my orders, my plants arrived quickly and packed very well. My plants have all been small but very healthy and hydrated. Everything from Hirt’s I have planted has done well in my container garden. Fave shop for sure. Thanks!

My package came quick! And it was wrapped so carefully! You could tell the seller cared about the plant getting there instead of just the sale. The quality is way better than what I thought it would be! Def buying more stuff from this seller since I know now that I’m able to trust them!

Ordered this plant a few months ago. For those wondering, yes the plant is tiny but healthy & I received mine in perfect condition, well packaged with bubblewrap secured around it. This little pepper plant has grown astoundingly well for me & is already at 3.5 ft tall loaded with glossy little black pearl peppers. I have them in my front yard among my tropicals & everyone stops by to inquire about them as the leaves start out green & turn glossy black as they mature. Very interesting, vigorous, & fun to grow pepper. Going to give the fruits to my neighbor as the guinea pig to see how hot they really are compared to his habaneros. Will be ordering from Hirt’s again in the future. Very pleased with their service & product.
