Description

(1-OZ) or 8,000+ Seeds Wan Shen Late Season GAILAN Gai Lan seeds; KAILAN KAILAAN; Chinese Kale 晚生芥蘭. 65 days. Brassica oleracea var. alboglabra; Kitazawa #294 The cover/first pic is from my veggie garden, taken on Dec 19 2020 here in Chicago Zone 5B, after surviving a dozen hard frosts & 20F deep freezes. These seeds can easily produce 20-30 lbs of GaiLan, if you have 100 sqft garden plot area and use transplant method. Or save half of the seeds for autumn or spring planting. You can either direct sowing onto well worked fertile soil, thin out the crowded area and eat them as stir fried baby greens or put some into ramen soup. Or use seedling starter tray and transplant them when seedlings have 3-4 true leaves, space them 3” apart with rows 8” apart. Do avoid hot summer period as bolting may occur quicker and stems won’t be as tender as spring or autumn crops. Partial shade is fine for zone 9-10, but full sun is preferred for zone 5 & colder climate. Here in SW Chicago ‘burb zone 5B, spring planting for direct sowing is late March to early April. Autumn direct sowing should occur around mid to late August, although seedling transplant could be as late as mid September, especially for low tunnel setup to protect from hard frost damage. You can harvest the top portion while leaving couple segments intact near the root to allow new shoots to emerge for second harvest in another 3-4 weeks. Most popular recipe is boiled gailan top off with oyster sauce, 蠔油芥蘭。Beef with Chinese Broccoli 芥蘭牛肉。I am addicted to Roast Duck Breast with Chinese Broccoli offered at My Thai restaurant here in Chicago West Loop.
