Description
60 Seeds UCHIKI RED KURI Hokkaido Winter Squash seeds; Japanese Hubbard; ウチキクリ; Cucurbita maxima Duchesne ssp. maxima convar. Kitazawa #045 Bright orange red fruits, tear-drop shape, with vibrant orange flesh offer flavor and good storability. Perfect for pairing with Blue Kuri (Kabocha) for an attractive fall market display, RedKuri Hokkaido is a popular winter squash for its particularly fine flavor. Good storage length; Vigorous plants with long vines. Growing tips: – space hills at least 3-ft apart; thin out seedling to one vine per hill – each hill should be at least 18″ wide and 12″ deep, with lots of organic matters – cover the soil surface around the vine root with mulch material (especially if you get lots of afternoon sun) – water during morning hours is better than evening hours (fewer disease/insect troubles) – pinch of the end of each “branch” after a female fruit flowered; this will promote bushy vine growth and bigger fruit – fruits should be harvested only when the stem is dried up – use climbing structures such as meshed wire fence, arbor, trellis or bean net, as fruits can rot (or feasted by slugs) sitting on the ground Popular recipe: make soup, roasting, or simply saute slices/chunks of Red Kuri, add a touch salt would be plenty. The skin is also edible. Fruit Size: about 5 to 8 lbs weight in average; yield about 3 to 5 fruits per vine Maturity: Approx. 90 days to maturity after transplanting Planting season: Late spring to early summer Germination rate 95%. tested 05/2021
