Can tolerate wet soils once established. Commonly planted in wetlands, near ponds or along streams to attract water fowl. It is robust with course, hairless leaves 4-20 inches long with stems that are thicker than most millets. Grows 2-4′ tall. Japanese millet is a weed-suppressing cover crop that can grow up to 4 ft in 45 days. Can tolerate several cuttings, but should reach 20 inches before cutting. Plant 1/4″ to 1/2″ in depth.
