100 Seeds ROUND WAX GOURD Seeds; Winter Melon; Indian Ash Gourd; Yuan Dong Gua; 圓型冬瓜; Kitazawa #089; Benincasa hispida This large melon is grown for its thick, white, sweet flesh. When ripe, the rind is covered with a waxy white coating that protects the fruit for long periods in storage. Weighs 14-22 lbs or 6-10 KGs. Warm season annual Maturity: Approx. 85-95 days Planting season: Late spring to early summer This is the most popular wax gourd variety with great germination rate. Germination & Cultivation tips: – I use heating pad and grow light indoor say two weeks before the last frost, and the wax gourd seeds began to emerge in just 4-5 days. – two weeks after the last frost, transplant seedling onto a mound 18″ wide and 18″ deep, well drained & fertile soil. – train vines to climb wired fence, trellis, bean net or arbor. Each vine should bear 1 to 3 fruits. Manual pollination if too few bees in your area. – note fruits laying on the ground may rot easily or get feasted by slugs & critters, let it sit on a brick or a cinder block. – allow fruits to mature on the vine before harvesting (use protection net just in case the vine breaks off). In many cases you will see white powder cover the wax gourd skin. Common recipe: Winter Melon Soup with Ribs, Riblets, or pork neck bones
