100 Seeds Oblong WINTER MELON seeds; Wax Gourd ; 長型大白冬瓜; Dong Gua; 20-lb possible; Kitazawa #170; Benincasa hispida This oblong shape wax gourd can reach 20 pounds. The light green skin is covered with very fine hair and will form a white waxy powder when mature. The waxy layer that forms over the ripe fruit protects the melon and allows for long storage periods. Maturity: Approx. 85-95 days Planting season: Late spring to early summer Germination rate 80%; tested 02/2020 Germination tips: – I used heating pad and grow light indoor and the wax gourd seeds began to sprout in just 4 days. – transplant say 2-3 weeks after frost when soil temperature is consistently over 50F. Here in Chicago SW ‘burb zone 5B, I transplant wax gourd seedlings right after Memorial Day weekend. – train vines to climb wired fence, trellis, bean net or arbor. Fruits laying on the ground may rot easily or get feasted by slugs & critters (put the fruit on top of a cinderblock or couple logs) – do provide support for the fruit hanging on the fence or trellis structure, as it could break off the vine due to the weight – allow fruits to mature on the vine before harvesting. In many cases you will see white waxy powder cover the gourd skin. – to yield large fruits, do limit just two fruits per vine. – do google for additional wax gourd growing tips or watch youtube how to videos
