10 Seeds organic Zucca Lunga di Napoli seeds; Long Pumpkin of Naples, 50+ lbs possible; Cucurbita maxima; a.k.a. “Piena di Napoli” Zucca Lunga di Napoli squash are oblong-shaped, more or less like a butternut squash, with a thin neck, and are often slightly curved. You can pick the young squash while still yellow to use as a summer squash, though most growers let them continue to grow until they reach 20 to 30 pounds. They may get up to 70 pounds and four feet long. They ripen from yellow to dark green and turn a soft tan color in storage. Seeds are collected from my hobby farm (in sw chicago burb) during nov 2021. I transplanted 5 seedlings back in late May and overall harvested about 20 fruits over 400 lbs total weight. Organically grown by preparing the bed & feeding the vines with aged horse manure & poultry manure, burnt ashes, rotten leaves, aged wood chips and comfrey green manure. 10 seeds are more than plenty for a home backyard garden, as the seeds are fairly easy to germinate and grow vigorously. You will need provide lots of space & nutrients to yield mammoth fruits. Let the vines roam on the ground as the fruits are too heavy to hang from any support structures (it actually collapsed one of my cattle panel arches), plus the adventitious roots from each leaf node can gather nutrients collectively, helping out the main root and produce bigger fruits. Do provide 50 to 100 sqft space for each vine to roam. But squash is also simply fried and served cold a scapece with a marinade of vinegar, oil, garlic and mint with a touch of chilli (in Campania) or sugar (in Sicily). Its pumpkin seeds are toasted, salted and eaten as a snack – a recipe that has remained virtually the same since Roman times. We are interested not only in biggest fruit, but also total fruits produced from a single vine. If your are in a warmer climate than us in 5B, you should be able to harvest 100+ lbs of fruits per vine with some basic TLC. Happy gardening 2022 & stay safe!
