Details: The Monstera deliciosa belongs to the Monstera genus of the Araceae family. Family : Araceae is a large family of plants that encompasses 114 genera and 3750 species. Most prominently found in tropical regions of the Americas, many genera in this family are cultivated and sold as houseplants including Monstera, Philodendron, Aglaonema (Chinese Evergreen), Dieffenbachia, Epipremnum (Pothos). Genus : Monstera genus includes 45 species that are tive to the jungles of southern Mexico and Central America. The genus is med from the Latin word for monstrous. They are evergreen vines that can grow over 60 feet tall in trees. Leaves are leathery, dark green, and often have holes in the leaf blade; which is the sigture of the Monstera and also why many species in this genus are referred to as a Swiss-Cheese plant. Care Tips : Water : Keep soil moist, but not sopping wet, by watering the 2 inches – 6 inches pots every 4-6 days and the larger, 8 inches – 14 inches pots every 7-10 days. Water less in the winter. Monstera’s tive jungle climate didn’t prepare it for droughts, so don’t allow soil to dry completely. Light : Monstera needs bright light to stay vibrant green, but will burn in 2+ hr/day of direct sunlight. Near a window that doesn’t get a lot of afternoon sunlight is ideal. Soil : Monstera loves peat to retain moisture. It should be a 50/50 split potting soil and peat. Fertilizer : Fertilize lightly in the Spring and Summer.
