This is a very rare houseplant and the leaves have a stunning resemblance to the skin of a watermelon PROPAGATION INSTRUCTIONS: -Can be done by water OR soil -If desired, you can cut right above my initial cutting on the stem to make a fresh cutting after travel -Pace the tip of the stem in rooting hormone for the best results -Place the freshly cut stem in filtered/distilled water to propagate -Once the roots have developed, you can plant it in potting mix. Place the plant carefully – it prefers bright, indirect light. Water thoroughly but don’t let water sit in the soil and get soggy TIPS: -They don’t like water with chemicals, so use filtered, distilled, or rainwater if your tap water is chemically treated Growing Conditions Drainage is critical, so make sure the container has a drainage hole in the bottom. Peperomia grows in any good-quality, regular commercial potting soil or a homemade mixture containing ingredients such as compost, loam or peat moss. A handful of sand or vermiculite promotes drainage Sun Watermelon peperomia thrives in bright, indirect sunlight. Although most types of peperomia thrive in bright light, too much light fades the bright colors of the variegated foliage. Indoors, a window with an eastern exposure provides excellent light. Outdoors, grow the plant in light shade or filtered light. Water Watermelon peperomia is a tropical plant that prefers humid conditions but is prone to stem rot in soggy soil. Water the plant deeply when the top of the soil feels slightly dry. Let the pot drain completely and never allow the plant to stand in water. Check outdoor plants daily during warm weather. In fall and winter, water sparingly and allow more time between each watering so the soil has time to dry a bit more than usual. If the air is dry in summer, increase humidity by setting the container on a humidity tray — a tray with a layer of wet pebbles. We only ship out beautiful, healthy plants. Cutting Only : Plant Cutting propagation can be done in water or soil, but once it begins, the plant has difficult switching to the other growing medium. If you place the cutting in water, the plant should remain in water once it grows larger. The same goes for a cutting propagated in the soil. It is normal for your cutting to shed a few leaves over time, but if you are seeing increased leaf loss, there might be an underlying problem. If your cutting plant has distorted leaf growth, this may be due to nutrient and/or light deficiencies, insect infestations, or too little water. Mealybugs and scale often take up residence on the plant, and can be removed with an alcohol-soaked cotton ball. If the cutting plant leaf tips are turning brown, this is a sign of low humidity. To solve this problem, you can lightly spray your plant with water or place it in a room with a humidifier. Bare Root Only : Soil: Lightweight, well-aerated, fast-draining growing medium Container: Use a small sized pot that keeps the roots tightly packed; Drainage holes are a must Light: Although this plant will survive in low light conditions, bright indirect sunlight is best Temperature: Daytime 70 F (21 C) and above, nighttime 60-65 F (16-18 C) Humidity: Higher humidity than average household levels (40-60 percent) Watering: Water when the soil is almost dry during growth phase, infrequently during winter Fertilizing: Feed monthly with diluted water-soluble fertilizer only in spring and summer Potted plant Only : DO NOT WATER YOUR PLANT for at least 2-3 days. DO NOT RE-POT for at least 6-8 weeks. Your plant Needs to settle and acclimate. Some leaves might drop or turn yellow.
